Less-Frequently Asked Questions

Questions nobody asked, answered anyway

Why is it called Bitwit?

Because I wanted to be a bit less of a nitwit.

Why is it on bit-wit.com?

Because the word "bitwit" can be subdivided a couple different ways, and I felt it best to be clear.

Who's the little worm guy?

I was thinking about the old game Snake (or NIBBLES.BAS for a certain number of us), and bits and bytes and nibbles. I was thinking about programming a snake to head toward the food. And I wanted him to succeed, to get the food, and be proud of himself. And suddenly, I needed to see him.

Isn't it a bit early to be trying to charge people for this?

NGL, I just needed something to keep me going.

Why is it valuable to study computer science?

I can't discuss why it would be valuable for you. I can only say that for me, it's the study of beautiful systems of movement, a perspective on the way things change over time.

I tend to look for meaning in things and not find it. Many are searching for some underlying order and meaning in the universe, some explanation for how things unfold. There've been many proposed models. I lean toward a computational one, but there is a tension in the area of computation between the practicality of engineering and the realm of pure abstractions.

I find value exploring that tension, trying (essentially) to move more in the direction of these ideal forms. That's a warm idea for me.

Why is the FAQ voice first-person plural and this first-person singular?

Think of this LFAQ as a sort of mullet: less formal in the back.
